Around the Diabetes Blogosphere: May 2016 Edition

http://type2diabetestreatment.net/diabetes-mellitus/around-the-diabetes-blogosphere-may-2016-edition/

Here we are at the end of the fifth month of 2016, which is simply amazing — how quickly this year is going by! Of course, the summer months bring a bevy of diabetes conference activity and we"re excited about that, but it"s already been a busy May...

Of course, we"ll be marking Memorial Day this weekend, honoring those who serve our country with many ultra-American summer fun traditions including barbecues, camping, pool openings, and of course the 100th running of the Indy 500 on Sunday, where two fellow type 1s will be taking part!

Without further ado, here"s our rundown of the great Diabetes Online Community (DOC) posts that caught our eye in May, in no particular order:

DOC Roundup BulletThe DOC was up in arms with news that United Healthcare and Medtronic had reached a deal making MedT"s insulin pumps the preferred in-network brand, making it very difficult for PWDs to get a non-MedT pump of their choice starting July 1. Dozens of protesting D-blogs surfaced along with a flurry of tweets, with the #DiabetesAccessMatters hashtag advocacy push gaining steam. We"re now all watching closely what happens next...

Diabetes Blog Week 2016 boxDOC Roundup BulletOur D-Community marked the 7th annual Diabetes Blog Week from May 16-20, with oodles of diabetes bloggers sharing their POVs on a shared topic each day. Creator and coordinator Karen Graffeo at Bitter-Sweet Diabetes reports that 131 people signed up and 450+ posts were written... so much to read in our "down time"!

A number of our picks below stem from the D-Blog Week initiative...

DOC Roundup BulletThis one from Brian Cohen at The Trials of Type 2 talks about the "other half of diabetes" and how life with D is 90% psychological.

DOC Roundup BulletD-Mom Reyna Maher at Beta Buddies shares an insightful post on Acceptance from her T1D son"s perspective, and we could barely stop smiling after reading this sweet post.

DOC Roundup BulletWe"ve heard it so many times, but Melinda Seed"s post at Twice Diabetes on Why She"s Here (in the DOC) hits home in sharing the message of "You Are Not Alone" with diabetes.

DOC Roundup BulletCurve Balls. Yep, they"re always getting thrown our way in this never-ending diabetes game. D-peep Trip Stoner at My Dear Pancreas knows the feeling and shares some of her experiences on fluctuating blood sugars.CGM fluctuating blood sugar

DOC Roundup BulletD-Mom Penny at A Sweet Grace isn"t afraid to talk about the Emotional Toll of diabetes, particularly when it comes to those scary issues that make her "water boil."

DOC Roundup BulletWords matter, but sometimes thinking about those Terms-Schmerms can be a bit maddening. Tamra Garcia at Diabetes Odyssey has some words of her own to share on that topic.

DOC Roundup BulletOne of the best parts of D-Blog Week is finding new blogs or re-discovering DOC peeps you hadn"t read in a while... We were happy to see Charli at Adventures With LADA participating with some great reads!

DOC Roundup BulletOf course, not every week is D-Blog Week, and lots of days are just normal tough days with diabetes... like for our friend Frank Sita in Australia, who recently had a maddening Thursday Night, Diabetes Style...

Logbook

DOC Roundup BulletThe newfound blog Me & My Broken Pancreas was launched in April by Type 1 D-peep Jeramie Irwin in Louisville, KY, and we enjoyed reading about his experiences trial-testing an Artificial Pancreas. It"s a great story, showing that all you need to do is reach out and ask if you"re interested in trying one of these investigative systems. Welcome to the DOC, Jeramie!

DOC Roundup BulletThe sailing is not always smooth. Life with D can be a hassle, and even when we think we"re rolling like rockstars with our diabetes management, sometimes we aren"t. Stephen Shaul at Happy Medium shares his POV on that.

DOC Roundup BulletThank You Letter to my Diabetes. Hey, it"s not too often we express gratitude for our pancreatically-challenged existence, but that"s just what Kim Hislop takes a moment to do in this excellent post.

Keep your eyes peeled in June for your own favorite posts of the month, and then send us your picks via email. We look forward to hearing from you!

Happy Memorial Day, Diabetes Friends!
