Little Lisette, The Diabetic Deep Sea Diver (Kids Book Giveaway!)

We all know that diabetes is challenging and sometimes scary, so we love how many kids" books take positive spins to make it a more palatable and even fun topic.

That"s why we"re excited to see a new children"s book from fellow D-peep Carrie Hetherington in New Zealand, called Little Lisette: The Diabetic Deep Sea Diver. Published in May, this 30-page paperback with colorful images is freelance writer Carrie"s first children"s book.

Her own D-story began at age 19 when she was a university student returning from a week-long road trip around the South Island of New Zealand. She ended up in the hospital the following day, with no idea what was happening.

"The first thing I remember is being in the ER on my back and the nurse asking me if I wanted to put a syringe in my stomach because I"d have to do it for the rest of my life. This was half an hour after the doctor had diagnosed me -- I had no clue what anyone was talking about and I certainly didn"t want to put the syringe in myself," Carrie tells us. "The rest was a blur, there weren"t enough beds so I was left overnight on a cot in the corridor, with no parents or anyone to tell me everything was going to be OK."

Growing up, Carrie attended diabetes camps and got involved in advocacy before starting to write for magazines all over the world. She represented New Zealand at the Australian and Canadian International Diabetes Federation conferences, and is now pursuing her Master"s degree in Development Economics and International Development at the University of Auckland.

Through her work at diabetes camps, she got inspired to write books to help small children. While Little Lisette is just hitting the shelves, she"s already having a second book illustrated.

"I am also part way through writing an adults book. It"s not self-help and stays away from anything serious -- it"s about laughing," she says. "It"s packed with hilarious quotes from other type 1s around the world too and I"ll be featuring full-page color photographs of people throughout. I don"t want to brag, but I"m really enjoying writing it. It"s always a good sign if you make yourself laugh in the process!"

The premise of her new book is pretty clear, with the fun detail that her glucose monitor is known as Little Lisette"s "Purple Friend" in the book:

"Little Lisette is a deep sea diver with type 1 diabetes. She is invited to a wonderul party under the ocean but decides to ignore her Purple Friend all day. She gets into a spot of bother because she is too embarrased to tell her friends about her low blood sugars and has to think about facing her fears." - Author Carrie Hetherington

Of course, it"s all about being brave and having fun in the context of D-management -- and not letting diabetes stop you from achieving your dreams or living your life how you want.

"You can do anything in the world if you listen carefully to your own Purple Friend, no matter what color he may be," the book description says.

Hey, you can see where Little Lisette"s coming from -- wanting to swim in the ocean, dance and sing with friends, and just enjoy a birthday party without having to fuss with diabetes blood sugar checks. We all get that, no?

It"s definitely a fun read, written in a way kiddos can easily understand. We love the messages of encouragement, recognizing the stigma that children (and also adults) can experiences when sharing with others that they have diabetes. That stigma is the whole issue that sparked the #ShowMeYourPump initiative a couple years ago, and it"s one that Little Lisette addresses well.

Available on Amazon, the Little Lisette book runs $12.86 in paperback form or $4 in Kindle e-book format. But before you go purchase a copy, here"s a chance to win one for yourself...
