UK researchers used a cohort of 14,351 participants and also found that sitagliptin didn"t raise any significant safety concerns among older patients. Physician"s Briefing/HealthDay News (1/12)     Study: Combined metformin, glyburide shows benefits in gestational diabetes Only 11% of women with gestational diabetes needed insulin after receiving a combination of metformin and glyburide, compared with 32% of those who received either drug alone, according to a study published in Diabetes Care. The findings, based on 104 women with gestational diabetes, showed comparable results in mean daily blood glucose and other neonatal and obstetric outcomes, including neonatal hypoglycemia, electrolyte imbalance and macrosomia, between patients in the combination therapy and monotherapy groups. US makes progress on some "Healthy People 2020" goals US officials say eight of 26 objectives set through the "Healthy People 2020" initiative have been met or exceeded, while eight others are improving, seven show little or no change, and three are getting worse. In the area of nutrition and physical activity, the percentage of adults who met guidelines for aerobic and muscle-strengthening physical activity exceeded the 2020 goal, but there was little or no change in obesity rates for adults or children. The study, which included 566 small primary care practices, also showed health IT adoption and use rose with electronic public reporting of data and pay-for-performance incentives. EHR Intelligence (1/12)     Study: PCPs beneficial in end-of-life care Medicare claims data from 2010 showed US regions with the highest primary care physician involvement in end-of-life care had lower spending during the final two years of life and patients had fewer ICU days in the final six months of life. Type 2 diabetes claims rose more than twofold, prediabetes claims increased 110%, hypertension claims went up 67%, and obesity-related claims rose 94% among babies and toddlers and up to 154% among 19- to 22-year-olds.
