Around the Diabetes Blogosphere: July 2016 Edition

http://type2diabetestreatment.net/diabetes-mellitus/around-the-diabetes-blogosphere-july-2016-edition/

Here we are at the end of another July, and the heat"s been on this past month! Not only in the outside temps across much of the States, but also here in the Diabetes Online Community (DOC).

Yep, there have been some hot topics afoot -- from big D-conferences to advocacy initiatives to some great new stories about living with diabetes.

Here"s a roundup of what caught our eye this month, in no particular order:

American flag iconHappy Birthday, America! As we marked another Fourth of July, we saw some fireworks-worthy news bits this month worth celebrating... read all about them in a post by our type 1 blogging friend Stephen Shaul at Happy Medium, who puts it perfectly: Sometimes, the Diabetes Community Wins. (Right on!!)

American flag iconThis month, we also marked the 95th anniversary of the discovery of insulin on July 27, 1921. ICYMI (in case you missed it) check out the "Unspeakably Wonderful" story of insulin we wrote about earlier in the month.

American flag iconWe were excited to attend the third annual diabetes advocacy MasterLab at the beginning of July, and naturally, a number of D-bloggers shared their POVs on that training event (us included!). Take a read through that list to get a sense of what went down in Orlando.

American flag iconOf course, the above-mentioned MasterLab happened in conjunction with the awesome yearly summer Friends For Life conference hosted by the non-profit Children With Diabetes. We enjoyed reading the takes on this year"s program from D-Dad Tom Karlya and fellow type 1 Kelly Kunik at diabetesaliciousness.

American flag iconWe loved finding this brand new blog just launched in July, called ElbowBumpChallenge -- written by a D-parent about her little guy named Logan with T1D. Looks like Logan was a special guest at FFL, and we love this first post and look forward to more! Welcome to the DOC, Logan and Family! (Oooh and we looove the National Hat or Pajama Day happening at schools on Nov. 14, which is also World Diabetes Day!)

American flag iconOur fellow type 1 blogger friend Kerri Sparling at SixUntilMe puts on her poetic hat, with Sweet Little Lancet. (Thanks for the reminder to change our lancets, Kerri!)

American flag iconBritain"s exit from the European Union (#Brexit) made big worldwide news this month, and D-peep Riva Greenbergused that news to explore how she thinks we should move away from diabetes standards of care -- or exiting this diabetes union, as she puts it.

American flag iconAnd the new UK Prime Minister Theresa May also happens to be living with type 1 -- the first national leader to do so! But our D-friend Renza Scibilia in Australia doesn"t want to see T1D steal the spotlight and trump the story of the job May"s meant to do.

American flag iconMeeting another person with diabetes (PWD) "in the wild" is always fun, and Chris Stocker at Life of a Diabetic shares his story of a chance encounter at a "Please Touch Museum" in Philadelphia. Not kidding.

American flag iconIt all comes down to Anxiety, Courage and Bravery -- so says D-Mom Reyna at Beta Buddies, in talking about managing her son"s type 1 daily D-management challenges, particularly in the crazy summer months when school"s not in session.

American flag iconWe"re so thrilled by the #OpenAPS work Dana Lewis and Scott Leibrand are doing, and this recent blog post shares some of their insights on how to close the loop safely and effectively. It"s all about sharing the #WeAreNotWaiting drive, and the numbers of those using this do-it-yourself Open Artificial Pancreas tech continue to grow!

American flag iconWelcome back after a blogging hiatus to D-Mom Meri over at Our Diabetic Life, who writes a fabulous post with an intriguing title: Cleaning Up Buffalo Splat. C"mon, how you can resist reading that?!

American flag iconNumbers, They Lie. This is a simple truth that our T2 blogging peep Kate Cornell at Sweet Success writes about, reminding us to not let our blood sugar numbers or A1C results dictate our well-being and feelings of self-worth. Totally spot-on, Kate... they"re just numbers. And we are so much more than that.

American flag iconD-Mom Hallie Addington shares a post over at Princess and the Pump about how diabetes is certainly an "unseen disease," but it isn"t always as invisible as we"d like it to be. Makes the heart a bit sad to think about how D can make kiddos feel different, and we are sending our hugs to Hallie and her little T1D princess.

Different is Beautiful

American flag iconOur Australian friend Frank Sita at Type 1 Writes that he"s been "Accepting My Ordinary" lately, and shares how he"s not always worn diabetes on his sleeve -- but is now making it a more visible part of his world over time. Thanks for sharing, Frank!

American flag iconOur T1 pal Scully in Ontario writes about how she"s always wondered what her family thought about her D, and just recently she"s had a chance to learn about those insights from the Type Awesomes in her life.

American flag iconAnd last but certainly not least, our type 1 blogging friend Ally over at Coffee and Insulin writes an incredible post, A Certain Mountain Hunger, that speaks to the heart. It"s not specific to diabetes, but talks eloquently about how nature calls to her and sometimes she just wants to disappear. Thank you for writing and sharing this, Ally!

Thanks to all for great works this month! Please let us know if any particular D-blogs catch your eye next month! Just drop a comment below, email us, or ping our social media channels at @DiabetesMine or Facebook.
