Study: CHD risk tied to high fasting TG, low HDL-C levels in diabetes A study in Diabetes Care showed that diabetes patients with high levels of fasting triglycerides and low levels of HDL cholesterol were at a 1.54-fold increased risk for coronary heart disease and a 2.13-fold increased risk for stroke, compared with those without diabetes. Researchers evaluated 3,216 American Indians with and without diabetes and found high levels of fasting triglyceride and low levels of HDL-C was tied to coronary heart disease risk in patients with LDL cholesterol levels of ≥130 mg/dL but not in those with lower LDL-C levels. Physician"s Briefing/HealthDay News (2/3)    Older men with diabetes may benefit from metformin, study finds Researchers found that older men with type 2 diabetes who were on metformin therapy had a reduced risk of developing cancer, cardiovascular disease, dementia, depression and frailty-related diseases. The findings in the Journal of Diabetes and Its Complications, based on 41,204 men ages at least 65, also revealed an association between metformin use and a reduced mortality rate. CDC reports declining sugary drink intake among US high schoolers CDC researchers reported that the rate of ninth- to 12th-grade students who drank sugar-sweetened beverages daily dropped from more than 33% in 2007 to 20.5% in 2015, with soda consumption decreasing among boys and girls of all races and socioeconomic levels. The findings in the agency"s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, based on national youth health survey data, also showed declining daily intake of milk and 100% fruit juice among high schoolers. Study compares outcomes for US, internationally trained physicians A study in The BMJ found slightly lower 30-day mortality rates for Medicare patients treated by general internists who graduated from medical schools outside the US, compared with those who graduated from US schools. Data showed slightly higher adjusted costs of care per admission for internationally trained physicians, but no difference in readmission rates. Nearly 4M chronically ill Americans gained coverage under ACA A study in the Annals of Internal Medicine found that almost 4 million Americans with at least one chronic medical condition who previously lacked health insurance gained coverage under the Affordable Care Act.
