Research links aortic stiffness to A1C in patients without diabetes A1C and homeostatic model assessment of insulin resistance were associated with the progression of aortic stiffness, measured by carotid femoral pulse wave velocity, among individuals without diabetes after adjusting for cardiovascular risk factors and physiological confounders, according to a study in Diabetes Care. UK researchers used a cohort of 4,386 individuals without diabetes and found a weakened correlation between aortic stiffness and HOMA-IR, but not with A1C, after additional adjustment for body mass index. Physician"s Briefing/HealthDay News (2/7) Lower A1C levels seen in people with sickle cell trait, study finds A study in the Journal of the American Medical Association showed that African Americans with a sickle cell trait had A1C levels of 5.72%, compared with 6.01% among those without SCT. The findings, based on 4,620 African Americans, revealed that low A1C levels were associated with significantly lower rates of prediabetes and diabetes when participants were diagnosed with A1C criteria. MedPage Today (free registration) (2/7) Wound-healing gel tested on diabetic cells University of Toronto researchers developed a peptide-hydrogel biomaterial that closed nonhealing wounds 200% faster than using no treatment and 60% faster than treatment with a common collagen-based product. The study in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences tested the biomaterial using keratinocytes from healthy human cells and those derived from older diabetic patients. AHA advises against late-night eating An American Heart Association statement in the journal Circulation suggests that cardiovascular disease risk can be reduced by consuming the bulk of meals and snacks during the day and avoiding the consumption of calories late in the evening or at night. Miami Herald (tiered subscription model) (2/6) Study assesses pediatric weight-management for Latino children Researchers said weight-management care benchmarks, such as weight management referrals and recommended lab testing, often are not met for overweight Latino children. The study in the journal Global Pediatric Health found benchmarks were not communicated or documented in 42% of primary care visits for overweight or obese Latino children ages 6 to 12. United Press International (2/6) Study shows how exercise may benefit heart tissue Research published in Experimental Physiology found 30 minutes on a treadmill may increase expression of genes that repair damaged DNA, helping to remodel heart tissues. University of Maryland researcher Stephen Roth said the process may contribute to the cardiovascular protection that exercise provides. Business Standard (India)/Asian News International (2/7) |
