What"s Happening for World Diabetes Day and Diabetes Awareness Month 2015

http://type2diabetestreatment.net/diabetes-mellitus/whats-happening-for-world-diabetes-day-and-diabetes-awareness-month-2015/

November is upon us -- that time of year when "all eyes are on diabetes," with it being national Diabetes Awareness Month and World Diabetes Day on Nov. 14. That day was chosen in honor of Dr. Frederick Banting, the co-discoverer of insulin back in 1921, who would be 124 years old were he still alive to celebrate this birthday!

This month of diabetes awareness has been going on for much longer than many realize. National Diabetes Month was actually established 40 years ago in 1975, though Congress and the U.S. presidents didn"t start passing proclamations recognizing November as "diabetes month" until the mid 1980s. The American Diabetes Association trademarked "American Diabetes Month" in 1997.

Meanwhile, World Diabetes Day was launched by the International Diabetes Federation in 1991 to call attention to this worldwide epidemic, and it got a big boost when the United Nations issued a resolution on it in 2006. The first-ever WDD was recognized in 2007.

All of these November observances exploded about a decade ago with the debut of the Diabetes Online Community (DOC), where people can easily create and promote new campaigns and initiatives. Some of these repeat annually, while others are specific to the particular year they’re launched.

Here"s a quick look at what’s being organized in November 2015 by some prominent organizations (in alphabetical order). Of course, if you know of any other activities, please let us know in a comment below!

American Diabetes Association (ADA)

This year is the ADA’s 75th anniversary and it has a “timeless message” for D-Awareness Month: eating well is one of life’s greatest pleasures, and enjoying delicious, healthy food helps with diabetes management.

Eat Well America

With its Eat Well, America! campaign, the ADA wants to show how easy and joyful healthy eating can be. Each week, the ADA will share nutritious recipes selected by noted chefs and cookbook authors for every meal of the day, and will feature tip sheets, how-to videos, and shopping lists.

All of the content for this campaign can be found online.

For World Diabetes Day on Nov. 14, the ADA blog will feature the story of a Texas doctor who became interested in pediatric endocrinology when his brother was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in their native Syria. According to the ADA, “this young man’s unique experience of obtaining quality diabetes care amidst a civil war shines a light on the needs of people with diabetes across the world.”

On Nov. 17, the ADA will be marking its first-ever National Healthy Lunch Day, encouraging Americans to “lunch right with every bite” and make better food choices to counter expanding waistlines, low energy and rising rates of type 2 diabetes and obesity-related illness. On this day, they"re asking us all to make or buy a healthy lunch and encourage employers and restaurants to provide healthy alternatives. You can share your own healthy lunch photos using the #MyHealthyLunch hashtag on Twitter.

Many local ADA chapters around the country also have their own specific campaigns and events, which can be found online at http://diabetes.org/local.

Beyond Type 1

This new organization kicked off earlier in 2015, and one of its co-founders is celebrity Chef Sam Talbot who lives with T1D.

What is Type 1 Diabetes poster

On Nov. 1, Beyond Type 1 is launching what it calls the "$1 Million Dollar Digital Campaign," which runs through World Diabetes Day on Nov. 14. During this time, the org promises that 100% of every dollar donated to Beyond Type 1 will go directly to the most promising efforts and programs working to educate, advocate and cure Type 1.
We"re told the campaign is designed not only to raise money, but to “spread awareness and generate support for your friends, family and beyond.”

For D-Awareness Month, this org has also created easy-to-read posters that educate about type 1 diabetes: what it is, how to detect it, and how to treat it. People are invited to bring these posters to school, use them in presentations, take them to the doctor"s office or hang them anywhere in your community to help educate the public!

Diabetes Hands Foundation (DHF)

This year we have a new Big Blue Test that isn’t confined to November, but stretches through the rest of the year and through 2016. Traditionally, the Big Blue Test has collected entries only in the month leading up to World Diabetes Day, but now, there will be three windows of collection: fall, winter, and summer.

This is of course a big international "test-in," where folks are encouraged to check and log their blood sugar, get physcially active for 14-20 minutes and then test again, and share that experience on BigBlueTest.org or by using the iPhone or Android app. It calls attention to the positive effects of exercise in diabetes, while also raising money for the cause; program sponsors donate $1 for each entry logged – up to $10,000 in each seasonal window – resulting in a total of $30,000 donated to diabetes charities by the end of summer 2016.

Results gathered since 2010 demonstrate that just 14 minutes of exercise has the potential to decrease participants’ blood glucose levels in some instances by as much as 20%. You don’t have to have diabetes to participate, and you can help spread word and participate with Big Blue Test activities locally. Last year as part of the program, sponsors also supported Big Blue Test grants to three local programs that help "people touched by diabetes who are in need of lifesaving supplies, medical tests, treatment, and/or patient education."

Diabetes Community Advocacy Foundation (DCAF)

DCAF is a grassroots non-profit org that hosts twitter chats, podcasts, and other awareness initiatives, mainly online.

For the last few years, on World Diabetes Day (which is a Saturday this year), DCAF hosts a special all-day Twitter chat using the #DSMA hashtag.

The chat is hosted by a succession of folks from the DOC in many different parts of the world, and a new topic is addressed every hour. Keep your eye out for this year"s topics to be posted soon here.

International Diabetes Federation (IDF)

The IDF publishes an extensive global list of activities happening on or near World Diabetes Day on Nov. 14.

Their goal is to expand the typical one-day World Diabetes Day campaigns to full-year impact. In fact, individual campaigns reached 100+ countries in 2014, and this year it’s growing even larger.

Like ADA, the 2015 IDF focus is on the role of healthy eating in diabetes management, with a campaign launched on May 19 at a companion event to the 68th World Health Assembly (WHA) in Geneva, Switzerland. The tagline is: “Nourishing development: halting the diabetes epidemic through healthy eating.”

Healthy Eating campaign diabetes

Essentially, the IDF is calling on national governments to implement a series of specific policies to reduce sugar consumption. The action plan voices IDF’s support for World Health Organization’s (WHO) conditional recommendation 2105 to reduce free sugars consumption to 5% of daily caloric intake. Check out this full event report of the 2015 WDD launch.

World Diabetes Day

Also on Nov. 12, the IDF plans to host a pre-WDD event where it will release a summary on the global and regional findings of the IDF Atlas 7th edition (which will be released in full at the annual World Diabetes Congress, taking place this year in Vancouver in early December).

Finally, each year on World Diabetes Day, IDF supports the Blue Monument Challenge, the lighting up of iconic monuments and buildings around the world in blue to raise diabetes awareness.

JDRF

On Nov. 1, the JDRF will launch online a campaign called T1D Looks Like Me, that includes a photo generator for people to add to a social wall collection of other #T1DLooksLikeMe photos.

They explain:

“This year during the month of November, we will be using our JDRF community as megaphones to empower and engage the entire global T1D community. Through our new campaign... we will showcase the faces and stories of people who feel the real impact of T1D day in and day out. T1D looks like the high school basketball player who checks his blood sugar on the bench during his game. T1D looks like the race car driver who at 225 MPH is at the top of his career and won’t let this disease stop him. T1D is a complicated, tiring, and unpredictable disease that too many of us know too well. T1D Looks Like Me shows and shares the many ages, stages and triumphs of the T1D community. Our shared vision of creating a world without T1D is what binds all of us together and what better month to kick-off this campaign than November.”

Type 1 Diabetes Looks Like Me campaign

The JDRF’s national PR team has big plans to promote this. They"ll be working with the DOC and mainstream media outlet, will feature several yet-to-be-named celebrities to encourage engagement, and will also develop a D-Awareness Month press release template and op-ed piece for local chapters and the public to use in their own communities.

They are also utilizing the social media platform Thunderclap to rally the entire T1D community around the same message at the same time, spreading the idea that T1D looks like all of us through Facebook, Twitter, and Tumblr.

In terms of advertising:

WebMD – JDRF has secured a custom T1D editorial section on the WebMD site with multiple display ads, a T1D quiz and promoted content, timed for national Diabetes Awareness Month.

Times Square - display advertising on a marquee in Times Square has been donated to JDRF one week/month for the next 12 months to showcase some of their premier programs. They hope this will go a long way in engaging participation in their Thunderclap campaign.

USA Today is running a United for Diabetes special edition – T1D and JDRF will be prominently featured in this supplement, coming out November 13-15.

Project Blue November

This group founded by D-Moms will be doing a tweet a day to raise awareness. They have a whole list of hashtags you can use each day in November, as well as posting a picture on Instagram each day.

They’ve also been keeping track of the state proclamations, and we’re thrilled to see that all 50 states within the U.S. have adopted an official proclamation recognizing November as Diabetes Awareness Month!

T1 International

We introduced T1 International (which stands for Type 1 Int, of course) last year along with its social media campaign #insulin4all, aimed at bringing the life-saving medication to everyone who needs it across the globe. The theme for 2015: “We are the WORLD in World Diabetes Day.”

This year’s focus is to show everyone that we are one united world of people with diabetes -- i.e. a global force standing together to push for access to diabetes supplies, care, and treatment for all. We think this is a fitting theme that brings us all back to the true spirit of World Diabetes Day.

The culmination of the campaign will again be on Nov. 14 (World Diabetes Day), but until then people can submit their photos. They also offer an action toolkit for those who want to get more involved in their aid efforts.

These are some of the larger campaigns and initiatives planned for November 2015.
